A man hit by a car early Saturday morning is now in stable condition though he could potentially face a drug charge.

According to Rome Police Department reports the crash occurred about 12:15 a.m. in Rome near the intersection of 411 and Callier Springs Road when an SUV hit 33-year-old Jerry Kines of Silver Creek. The driver told police he was walking in the middle of her lane and she couldn’t swerve out of the way in time. Kines was taken by EMS to Floyd Medical Center.

Nurses allegedly found a glass tube with white residue on it as they were treating Kines and handed it over to police. The tube was sent to be tested for a possible illegal substance. Kines was upgraded to stable condition by Saturday evening.

Officers are investigating whether a second vehicle may have struck the victim and drove off before police arrived at the scene. Witnesses could not say definitively they had seen a second car in the area hit him.

No criminal charges were filed against the SUV driver.
